Marcer Campbell displays a roving curiosity in his paintings and drawings. Expressing himself primarily through landscapes, both urban and rural, Campbell investigates time and community. Cars lean into one another, buildings gossip, wildflowers evaluate and tree branches write park poems; all under breathing skies. There is a quilt maker’s sensibility about Marcer’s perspective, a stop action photography way of looking at pavement and bridges and the produce of human effort and at the same time the plants and living water are visualized as less staccato. The painter has an indigenous understanding of his subjects: these varied and connected Northern spaces: the way a skipping stone fits in a hand, which stairs to sit on, the posture of a church building. His work shares knowledge from life spent orbiting the Solway Firth and we are invited to come along.
